Comparing volume

Part ofMathsMeasuringYear 2

How do you compare volume?

Leslie looking thoughtfully at a measuring jug and a glass of orange juice that is half full.

Volume is the amount of liquid that is in a container.

This is different from capacity which is the amount the container can hold.

The volume of liquids can be compared by looking at the size of the container and measuring the amount of liquid in each one.

You can use the 'greater than' (>), 'less than' (>) and 'equal to' (=) symbols to compare volumes.

Comparing volume

To compare the volume of liquids you can start by looking at the containers they are in.

However, to compare volumes more precisely, they need to be measured.

Liquids are measured in litres and millilitres.

A bucket, bottle of water, shampoo bottle, drinks tin and a cup all in a row.

Whether a volume is more or less than another can be shown using the 'greater than' (>), 'less than' (<) and 'equal to' (=) symbols.

three rows of 2 jugs with liquid in them. Top row jug 1 has 500ml of juice in it and a more than symbol > and jug 2 300ml. Row 2, jug 1 has 300ml < jug 2 with 500ml. Row 3, jug 1 has 300ml = jug 2 with 300ml.
