Jasdeep: Hi Lauren!
Lauren: Shh… come in, come in.
Jasdeep: Aww… He’s so cute.
Lauren: Isn’t he? Will you come to his naming ceremony next weekend?
Jasdeep: Is it a religious ceremony?
Lauren: No. My family is Humanist. We trust in science to explain the universe and we don’t believe in God or an afterlife.
Jasdeep: Oh! Do you have a temple, or church or anything?
Lauren: No, but my parents sometimes meet with other Humanists to have discussions and socialise. We don’t believe in God, but we still think you should do good because it makes the world a better place, so we also make sure to volunteer for local charities.
Jasdeep: Are there many Humanists?
Lauren: There are lots of Humanists in this country and around the world, and there are millions of non-religious people who don’t believe in God.
Jasdeep: I didn’t know that.
Lauren: Now you do!
Jasdeep: True! So what happens at the naming ceremony?
Lauren: Friends and family get together to welcome the baby, and we discuss the role of parents and other family members.
Jasdeep: Like sisters?
Lauren: Yeah, like sisters! We also talk about what the name means. But different Humanists will do things differently. There aren’t any set rules about it. Sometimes we even read a poem or sing songs. After all, it’s a celebration!
Jasdeep: Count me in!
Humanists do not believe in a god. They believe it is possible to live a good and fulfilling life without following a traditional religion.
They do not follow a holy book either. Instead, Humanists value traits like reason and rely on science to explain the way things are.
Humanists believe that people have one life to live - there is no afterlife. As a result they focus on being happy and making the most of their life. They also believe they have a duty to support others.

Do humanists worship?
Humanists do not have a regular place of worship. They do, however, hold talks, lectures and discussion groups all around the country.
Humanist also have ceremonies, celebrations or special occasions. Many Humanists hold naming ceremonies, non-religious weddings and funerals.
