Books can help us
We use different books to help us do different things.
You would use a cookery book when you are cooking, you wouldn't use it to look up the spelling of a word.
It's important to choose the right book for what you are doing. Will Beth, Kim and Patrick find a book to help them name a funny little bug?
The three kids are in a back garden exploring something. We see them lifting a rock and looking underneath. There’s a few woodlice scuttling around underneath. The kids haven’t seen a woodlouse before.
PATRICK/BETH/KIM: Oooohhhhhhhhhhhh
PATRICK: What’s that?!
Patrick says while pointing at the woodlouse.
KIM: Hmmm… It’s not a ladybird, because its got no spots.
BETH: And it’s not a spider because it’s got too many legs!
PATRICK: I wish we knew it’s name.
They all seem a bit dejected. Suddenly Beth has a eureka moment.
BETH: I know what we can do!
Beth runs off and the other two look at eachother a bit confused. Beth is inside the house looking at a bookshelf. She reaches down a book from a shelf above her, the cover reads ’A to Z of Bugs!'. Beth reappears in the garden carrying the book. She holds it out for them to see.
PATRICK: Coool! Good idea Beth.
Beth starts to flick through the book.
BETH: Hmmm, let’s see.
As they flick through they land on different bugs, and they determine why they aren’t the right one.
KIM: Not that one! That’s got wings!
PATRICK: Not that one, that’s a caterpillar!
BETH: What about this one?
Beth hold's the image up and they compare it to the bug before them. It lines up perfectly. It’s an illustration of a woodlouse with a couple of notes on it.
KIM: That’s it! That’s it! It’s a Wo… Wo… Hmm I can’t say that word.
They all look dissapointed. Suddenly dad comes over to them.
DAD: What’s all this then? What have you found!
Dad sounds excited and enthusiastic.
BETH: We found this bug but we didn’t know what it was so I got a fact book to help us find it. Can you help us read it’s name?
DAD: Sure I’ll give it a shot. Ahh let’s see, what have we got here. Hmm yeah I think you’re right. That right there is a Woodlouse.
KIM: A what?
DAD: A woodlouse. It’s a funny little bug with a hard shell and 14 legs.
BETH: A woodlouse! Great, thanks dad!
The kids walk back to the rocks they were looking at and continue inspecting the woodlouse.
NARRATOR: Fact books are a great way to find out information about things. The ’A to Z of Bugs’ book helped the children find out what the mystery bug was. What books do you like to use?
As the narrator says these things, the woodlouse appears walking along the ground.
End.
