Negative and question forms
The negative form is used when you say you won't be doing something.
For example, I will do becomes I will not do in the negative.
To put a verb in the negative form in the future tense in Irish, do two things:
- Add ní before the verb
- Lenite or add a séimhiú (h) to the verb if it begins with a consonant —don't do this to vowels.
| Positive | Negative | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| cuirfidh mé | I will put | ní chuirfidh mé | I will not put |
| ólfaidh mé | I will drink | ní ólfaidh mé | I will not drink |
| críochnóidh mé | I will finish | ní chríochnóidh mé | I will not finish |
| éireoidh mé | I will rise | ní éireoidh mé | I will not rise |
| osclóidh mé | I will open | ní osclóidh mé | I will not open |
It is exactly the same when talking about others. For example, Ní dhruidfidh mé mo leabhar, I will not close my book, would be Ní dhruidfidh sé a leabhar, He will not close his book.
Use the question form when you want to ask if someone did something.
For example, I will go becomes Will I go? in the question form.
Asking questions is similar to using the negative form. To put a verb in the question form in the past tense in Irish, do two things:
- Add an before the verb
- Eclipse, or add an urú at the start of the verb if it begins with certain consonants — but don't do this to vowels.
