Hafeez: Hi, I’m Hafeez, and I’m a Muslim.
Welcome to my mosque – the place where Muslims worship. In Arabic, it’s called a masjid.
I like the dome. It lights up at night!
Most mosques have a dome, and some also have a tall tower called a minaret.
In some countries, the minaret is used to call Muslims to prayer five times a day, but we don’t do that here.
When we go inside, we take off our shoes and wash ourselves in a special way, called wudu. Women and girls cover their heads.
We don’t pray on chairs in the mosque, unless they are needed.
We have carpet on the floor and prayer mats that we kneel on. We always pray facing Makkah, the holiest city in the world for Muslims.
The mihrab, a niche in the wall, shows the direction of Makkah.
Look up there. The dome looks even better from the inside!
Our leader is called an Imam. At Friday prayers the Imam shares Islamic teachings and leads us in Salah. That’s a prayer with special movements. Each set of movements is called a Rakah.
We do the prayer five times every day, either at the mosque or wherever else we are.
Thanks for visiting my mosque. Come back any time!
