When is it half past the hour?

The hour hand (the shorter hand) also moves. When it is half past the hour, the hour hand is halfway between one number and the next number.

Reading analogue clock
Here is an analogue clock. The short hand is the 'hour hand' and the long hand is the 'minute hand'.

You can read an analogue clock by looking at where the hour hand and the minute hand are pointing.
To work out the hour, you look at which number the hour hand points to.

The hour hand might be between two numbers.
When it's between two numbers, always look at the number before the hour hand.
When the minute hand points straight up to 12, it is the start of a new hour. This is known as o 'clock.
When the minute hand points to 6, it is half past the hour.
On this clock, the minute hand points to 6 so it is half past.
The hour hand points halfway between 12 and 1, so the time shown is 'half past 12'.
Example 1

What time is this clock showing?
✓ First, let's check the hour hand. The hour hand is the shorter hand.
The hour hand is pointing to 4.
Next let's look at the minute hand. The minute hand is the longer hand.
It points to 12 which means it is 4 o'clock.
Example 2

What time is this clock showing?
✓ First, let's check the hour hand. It is between 10 and 11.
When the hour hand is between two numbers we look at the number before the hour hand to tell us the hour. So it is 10.
Next let's look at the minute hand.
It points to 6 which means it has gone half way around the clock so it is half past.
The time is half past 10.
Example 3

Betty says that this clock shows six o'clock. How do we know that they are wrong?
✓ First check where the hour hand is. It is between 12 and 1.
Let's check where the minute hand is. It is pointing to 6 so it must be a half past time.
Let's check the hour hand again. It has not reached 1 yet. It is in between 12 and 1.
The time is half past 12.
Six o'clock looks like this on a clock.
