Welcome to Cara and Martin’s vocal warm up extravaganza! Join in to prepare foranything using your voice - it could be speaking, singing or just performing in general.
CARA: Hi guys, It's me Cara.
MARTIN: Hi everyone, I'm Martin the Martian!
CARA: And we are here today to share some super vocal exercises with you. For when you're speaking, singing and just performing in general.
MARTIN: Or all at the same time!
CARA: OK, so first, take a big deep breath in -
Cara inhales normally and Martin takes a huge breath in.
CARA: - and out.
Cara exhales normally and Martin makes loud noises while blowing all the air out of his mouth. Cara gives Martin a strange look.
CARA: Great Martin. Next, make sure you're standing shoulder width apart.
Martin puts his feet very far apart, making him look much shorter than Cara.
CARA: Hmmm, too far Martin - like me.
Martin gets taller as he moves his feet to be shoulder width apart.
CARA: Great! Now we're going to do some mouth exercises. Pretend you've got a tiny piece of chewing gum in your mouth and it's starting to get bigger and bigger, OK? Like this.
Cara and Martin start to chew. Martin starts to panic as his pretend chewing gum is getting too big.
MARTIN:(whimpers)
CARA: Martin, it's not real just pretend!
MARTIN:(gulp)
Martin swallows his pretend chewing gum.
CARA: Oh! I know! This is great for opening up your jaw. Grab your hands together like this, make sure it's nice and tense.
Martin pushes his hands together so much he shakes.
CARA: Too much Martin… Move forward like this. Copy me, OK?
Cara and Martin shake their hands. Martin does it so much that his face shakes.
CARA: Ok good. That's step one done. Step two. Relax your mouth… and do them all together.
They both shake their hands and faces and make noises with their mouths.
CARA: Great Martin.
MARTIN: Thanks!
CARA: I think we're ready to sing now!
MARTIN: Huh?
Martin shakes his head to say 'No!' and looks panicked.

Preparing to Sing
When preparing to sing, it’s important to adopt the right stance and to feel comfortable, warmedup and ready to go.
Following simple steps like these will help you feel confident and ready to give your bestperformance.
Here are some other exercises you can do to warm up:


Loosen Up
- Loosen up the whole body by getting into a clear space and shaking your feet, hands,arms and legs to get rid of any tensions in the body
- Roll your shoulders backwards and forwards, and make a figure of 8 with your hips,keeping the rest of your body as still as possible
- Relax your jaw by starting with a yawn, then try squeezing your face up as tightly aspossible and then releasing into a wide, open expression
- Finally, finish off by relaxing your lips and exhaling for about 15 seconds, expelling allthe air in your lungs as a lip trill

Singing Posture
- Stand up straight, with your arms and hands loose by your sides
- Relax your shoulders and keep your chest high
- Your head should be level, with your chin parallel to the ground and your neck straight
- Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart, with your knees loose


Breathing Exercise
- Breathe out through your mouth, releasing all the air from your lungs
- Once your lungs feel empty, allow your tummy to relax and fill with air through yourmouth - at this point your belly should expand with all the air you are taking in
- Repeat this process and try to make the outward breath (exhale) last as long as possible
- Experiment by making a ‘sss’, ‘shh’ and ‘fff’ noise on the exhale - this will warm up yourmouth and help you hear exactly how much air you are letting out

Independent Warm Up
Try making up your own warm up sequence with exercises that make you feel relaxed andready to sing. Teach your pattern to a friend and see if they find it useful!
