A still life refers to a painting or drawing which is made by looking at real-life objects. In this episode, Martha creates her own still life drawing of a saucepan and a jug.
Oh, hello you people.I was just setting up a few things to draw.
I like the shape of these guys. Now, when you make a painting or a drawing by looking at objects, it's called a still life.Nothing's going to move, which can happen if you're drawing a person. The French call it nature's not or dead nature.Oh, you know, it can be fun drawing absolutely anything.Because the more you look at things, the more interesting their shape becomes.I really like how this long handle connects to the big portrait. It's not an easy thing to draw, but I love a challenge when you're drawing from observation.Try to work out how each object relates to the one beside it.Compare sizes and angles so that your proportions are roughly right.I like to use my thumb to measure distance so the soft pan is about one thumb wide, whereas the jug is two thumbs tall. Now when you look at circular objects from an angle, the circles become ellipses, like the sauce pan and the top of the jug.Now these can be tricky, but once you marked on the important shapes, the drawing really comes together.I've drawn a circle for the jug belly, and I can connect it to the top and bottom with some knives. Now, I don't mind the extra lines here as I'm interested in shift, not detail. It doesn't really matter if you don't get the shape exactly right.Sometimes drawing can be all about how you see things. So, you know, don't be upset if you're drawing.Just look like an exact representation of the object. That's what photographs are for.I did this version of a painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Now he could draw perfect representations of objects, but he decided to draw them in a way that represented what he loved most. The color, the shape.Like dark. And Irish artist William Scott loved the shape of this long handled pan.I did this version eventually it became a flat shape that he loved incorporating into his abstract paintings.I did this version too.Now you can use anything as a subject.Your schoolbag, a water bottle or bits and pieces around the classroom like pots or boxes. But I think I'll keep going here and try to get these shapes looking just right.There.No, it's not too bad. That's a beautiful drawing, Martha.Oh. Hi, Trevor. Thank you.I'm calling it saucepan and Jug.Sometimes the simplest objects are the most beautiful.Don't you think, Martha? What's a lovely thought?Trevor, would you like this painting?I certainly would.I'll drop it round to you later. How does that sound?Thank you. Martha. So when you are choosing your objects for your still life, trust your instincts and go for it and draw it and your own way and your own time.I asked some of my friends to send me their electronics.See what you think of.

Still life
Still life art is drawing or painting objects that are arranged in a certain way.
These objects can be anything from fruit to vases.
The aim is to look and think about the shapes and size of the objects in front of you.

Where you look from
In a still life class, everyone will draw the same objects in a different way.
This is because where you stand to look at the objects will change the angle that you view them at.
So, your drawing could look very different to someone else's in the room.

Light and shadow
Looking closely at these objects can help you to think about the light that is hitting them and their colours.

The details
Still life improves your looking skills and is a great way to start drawing.
The objects will not move unlike a person! We can take our time, slow down and notice the details of things.
Look at all the different colours in a red apple. Can you see red, orange and yellow?

Paul Cézanne
Many famous artists have explored still life drawing and painting.
Paul Cézanne was famous for his still life paintings. He didn’t believe in drawing out the shapes first, instead he used paint straight away.
