If you want to greet somebody in Spanish, the most common way to say 'hello' is hola.

The greeting you use might change depending on the time of day:

There are lots of other ways to greet people. These can be different depending on who you are talking to. For example, asking someone how they are feeling.

You can use ¿Qué tal? when talking to a friend and ¿Cómo está? when speaking formally to someone like a teacher or a parent.

Cognates

Spanish has lots of cognates. Which means that the word in Spanish sounds a lot like the word in English. For example fenomenal sounds like phenomenal.

When you ask a question in Spanish the punctuation is different to English. In Spanish you have to put an upside-down question mark at the start of the question.
