Introduction to clay

Clay is found usually where water once was like a dried-up stream.

It has been used for building and making things for thousands of years.

It can be made hard by placing it in a special hot oven called a kiln.

Some clay does not have to be heated for it to harden.

Air drying clay

Air drying clay is used in schools. It takes about a day to dry but it doesn't need to be heated in a kiln.

When you get a piece of clay fresh from the bag it can be quite wet.

This makes it easy to mould into different shapes.

There are lots of ways to use clay.

Sticking clay together

‘Slip’ can be made to help attach clay to clay.

By adding water to some clay, you can mix it together to create a paste. This is a clay glue.

Working with clay can be very relaxing.

Remember to use your imagination and see what you can create.
