How do we create music?
While learning to play a musical instrument is great fun, you don't need to play an instrument to start making music with your friends.
You can make music using objects you find in your home, classroom or the area around you. We call these found sounds.

Watch: YolanDa looks for found sounds
YolanDa is going to help you get started. Discover what sounds and music YolanDa makes when she visits a school.
What do you think she might find to help her create her first sound?

YolanDa: Today I'm going to school to see what sounds and instruments I can discover.
In a school there's loads of things that can make great sounds that ever look down here.
Things in this bag look interesting.
Oh, excuse me, I need the caretaker here in the school. I'm YolanDa and I'm looking for things that make different sounds. Can I have a look in this bag for the jumble sale?
Caretaker: Of course. You're welcome to have a look.
YolanDa: Thanks so much.
I wonder what sounds we could make with these objects. Ha.
This could be a giant drumstick and this could be my drum. What sound could we make with this hose? I like that one!
And this piece of string? I know.
Sounds like a guitar. Isn't it amazing what sounds we can make with everyday objects all around us? I wonder what my group of experts, the Mighty Music Makers, could make with these.
Children: We made you a Big Box Bass YolanDa!
YolanDa: Well done Mighty Music Makers. Your Big Box Bass looks amazing and will sound great in our band. You've worked so hard and it's so beautifully decorated. Now when you've made all of your new instruments, we can meet up and play them with the band.

YolanDa has made a big box bass from a box, broom handle and an old washing line.
Which instrument does this sound like?
A big box bass is an instrument used in American folk music from the 1900s.
It makes a fun, low pitch twanging sound that's similar to a double bass or bass guitar.
Watch: YolanDa at the street market
YolanDa is exploring a street market looking for some found sounds. What kind of sounds do you think she is going to find there ?
YolanDa: Hello again everybody. It's a lovely sunny day and I don't know about you, but I love going to street markets. I wonder what kind of sounds we can find here.
Market Seller: It’s all fresh, it’s all cheap!
YolanDa: Can you hear the market seller shouting about what they have for sale? I'm going to see what kind of noises we can make with things for sale at the market stalls.
I found this giant comb. I wonder what sound it will make if I run my fingers along it.
That sounds great. I'm definitely buying this. Excuse me. Just this comb please?
Market Seller: A pound please.
YolanDa: A pound, here you go. Thank you very much.
This stall here sells lots of cardboard tubes. I'm gonna buy this one.
Hello, just this cardboard tube please.
Stallholder: Thank you very much.
YolanDa: Thank you, Thanks!
I wonder what kind of instruments my Mighty Music Makers will make out of these things.
Children: YolanDa, we made kazoos for everyone in the band!
YolanDa: Kazoos, amazing. They'll sound great. I can't wait to try one myself, and they'll make a very cool bluesy sound. Now when you've made all of your instruments, we can meet up and play with the band.

What is a comb kazoo?
Using the objects YolanDa found in the street market, the Mighty Music Makers made a comb kazoo.
It's made from a comb and some tissue paper.
Humming or speaking into the kazoo makes a cool buzzing sound.
Hum or sing through the kazoo and see what melodies you can make for your music.
If you're working with your friends, why not make and play your big box bass and comb kazoo together to create your own music!
