As part of the Nine to Five with Stacey Dooley, Abbey learnt about leadership in the workplace. Here's what being a leader means to her.
Abbey explains what it means to display leadership at work.
"We're just having some gnocchi man!"
My name's Abbey, and I've just finished back to back work experience as part of the nine to five with Stacey Dooley.
"Good afternoon and thank you for calling."
One of the key skills I learnt was leadership in the workplace.
"If we work as a team and then we'll all like do a section."
Leadership is about bringing together a group of people's skills to get the best outcome.
"Ultimately, they're so thrilled to have you." "I know. It's like the feeling of like euphoria isn't it."
Leadership really is about setting goals.
"Yous two especially cannot afford to be late to work."
Being clear with others about what you need from them.
"We didn't have the best start this morning, so I think everybody needs to just come back, try and smash it today."
You've gotta remember that no one is bigger than the team.
"If you show plenty of respect you're gonna get the better jobs, like me chatting to the customers."
So you've gotta work together, no matter what position you're in.
"This is so difficult."
You've gotta listen to your team.
"Oh my days, I think you'd be better at this than I am you know, I can't lie."
You really have to support your team when they need you. Leadership really is about understanding that and putting it into practice.
"Teamwork." "Teamwork makes the dream work." "Love that one!"
Your team members might have skills and qualities that will really benefit you.
"My first pasta!" "Well done. Mercedes is so good at everything."
To help your team when they're lost…
"Let's fix some pods."
…you've gotta draw on your own skills to help them achieve.
"You'll get some muscles doing that every day wouldn't you."
So it's important to just keep open, keep learning and keep developing.
"That's our spot." "We're just gonna double check it."
"Absolutely bang on!" "Yeah!"
Treat people the way you like to be treated because people will work harder for a leader that they respect.
"My team leader, I don't think I could have done it without Abbey."
Leadership might not be a key skill now, but if you keep working at it and put the effort in, it really can be.
What does it mean to be a leader at work?
- Being a leader is not just about how senior or important you are. You can show leadership no matter what your role is in a company
- Leadership really is about setting goals and being clear to others about what you need from them
- Be a good team worker: being a leader doesn't mean you're removed from the people you work with. Get to know them well, so you can understand how to best harness their skills
- And to help your team when they need you, you have to improve your own skills. So keep learning and developing yourself
- Most importantly, treat people the way you like to be treated, because people will work harder for a leader that they respect.
