Who was Robert Louis Stevenson?

  • Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh on the 13th of November, 1850.
  • When he was a child, he was often sick with coughing and missed a lot of school. Instead he was tutored at home.
  • As a boy Robert loved to write stories.
  • When he got older, he began to travel all over the world, to places like France and America. Often he would go to warm places that would help with his coughing and blocked chest.
  • When he was 25, inspired by his boyhood love of stories, Robert decided to become a writer.
  • His novel Treasure Island was published in 1883. It's an adventure story about pirates and hidden gold!
  • In 1876, Robert met an American lady called Fanny Osbourne and four years later they married.
  • In 1886 Robert published one of his most famous books called Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It's a story about a man who drinks a special formula and becomes a completely different person!
  • Robert and Fanny went to live on an island called Samoa in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Robert carried on writing in Samoa, but in 1894 he died very suddenly. He was only 44.
