Quiz: What weird stuff is in your food?

Part ofLearn & revise

What would you say if someone told you that you’ve eaten a beaver’s anal glands?

You’d probably tell them they’re bonkers. But, if you’ve ever happened to eat vanilla ice cream then there's teeny, tiny chance you've eaten castoreum. This additive is derived from, you guessed it, secretions from a beaver’s butt. It's not as widely used in food these days, but can still be found in some perfumes.

It’s not the only strange ingredient that crops up in our food - from sheep sweat to shellac, many of our favourite treats contain things many would rather not know about. They’re completely safe in the quantities that are approved to be in our food, and their constantly under review to ensure that this is the case, but knowing what they are might make some people queasy.

Let’s put the strength of your stomach to the test - see how many you can get right.
