Notes for parents

After watching the video, students will know the following.

• *To multiply by 10, you must move the number one column to the left (to the tens column) and then fill the other columns (the units columns) with 0. **For example, 4 multiplied by 10 is 40 because we have moved the 4 one column to the left (to the tens column) and filled the remaining column (units column) with 0. *

• To divide, you must do the opposite. To divide by 10 you must move the numbers one column to the right. Remember to fill the remaining columns with 0.

• *If you multiply by 1, the number stays the same. *

• *If you multiply by 0, the answer is always 0. *

When you multiply by 1 the answer stays the same. 21 × 1 = 21

When you multiply by 10, move all the digits one place to the left, putting a zero in the empty space. 21 × 10 = 210
