|  | When the BBC opened its Birmingham studios at Pebble Mill in 1971, who would have guessed what an amazing reputation the place would gain over the years.

 | |  | In 1951, the BBC acquired the lease for the nine-acre Pebble Mill site. A Model of the plans for the new BBC building were drawn up and presented to the UK press in 1962. Building work began in 1967. HRH Princess Anne opened the new Birmingham Broadcasting Centre (Pebble Mill) on the 10th November 1971. It was the first purpose build broadcasting centre in the united kingdom.
