Ashes joy for Trott

England and Warwickshire batsman Jonathan Trott exclusively tells BBC WM's Joanne Malin what winning the Ashes means to him.

Warwickshire batsman Jonathan Trott has told of his joy at helping England win the Ashes with victory at The Oval.

Debutant Trott became only the 18th man to score a century in his maiden Test appearance for England as they regained The Ashes with a momentous 197-run win in the deciding Test to seal a 2-1 series win.

"It's slowly sinking in," a delighted Trott told BBC WM's Joanne Malin.

Deciding Test

"It's sort of surreal. You work so hard and for so many years for moments like these.

"People who have played a lot of Tests have been telling me that it's one of the best days you will ever have and to soak it up and that's what I intend to do."

Trott revealed that the key to his debut success with the bat for the Three Lions was in the way he approaching the deciding Test.

"I tried not to get overawed or freeze because of the situation and I just treated it like another game for Warwickshire," he admitted.

Waiting to bat

"I just went out there and played the way I play for my county.

"It may sound surprising but it's a lot easier when you get out there than when you are sitting around and talking and waiting to bat."

Trott said he did not get too carried away celebrating because of his call-up to the England squad as Andrew Flintoff's replacement for the One-Day International against Ireland on Thursday 27 August.

"I had a drink or two in the changing room and then we just had a chat amongst ourselves and family.

World record

"My family have been overjoyed and it's been a good introduction to Test cricket."

After losing 5-0 in Australia in 2007, victory at The Oval was reminiscent of England's famous 2005 Ashes win.

Australia resumed on Sunday August 23, 2009, 80-0 needing a further 466 for a world record win but twice lost two wickets in two overs.

Andrew Flintoff, in his final Test, brilliantly ran out Ricky Ponting (66) and Mike Hussey was last out at 1749 BST on day four after a defiant 121.

Life-size balloon

The target of 546 had never been achieved in any first-class match, and only once had a team scored more than 500 batting last in a Test.

Meanwhile, Solihull artist Bez Pitcher helped BBC WM's Australian-born presenter Ed Doolan 'celebrate' the Ashes win by making a life-size balloon caricature of man-of-the-moment Trott to keep him company as he presented.

"I'm told Ed's lived for 43 years in Birmingham so now as he's 'English' I thought he might like to spend a day with an English sportsman!"
