Les Ross book club - 2008

Have you ever fancied yourself as a book reviewer? Well Les Ross wants you to join him on BBC WM to discuss his book of the month.

On the last Wednesday of every month, Les will be joined by Nick Harvey Adams - a keen reader and book retailer - to announce his 'book of the month'.

And he wants you to come and review it for him.

Les is looking for four BBC WM listeners - ideally two men and two women - to pop into the BBC WM studios to offer their thoughts on the chosen author's work.

Browsing for her favourite book.

Searching for her favourite book.

You can be an avid reader or a novice; it doesn't matter. Les just wants to have a natter (or a moan!) about the book in question.

He'll ask you what the book's about, how long it took you to read it and what you thought of it. He also wants to chat about the themes and will ask you to give the text an overall rating.

Every four weeks, Les will invite four new reviewers into the BBC WM studios for a chat about that month's offering.

How do I put myself forward?

Tune in to Les Ross on BBC WM on the last Wednesday of every month to find out what the chosen book will be.

If you then fancy having a go at reviewing it:

Every month, Les will choose four new 'critics' to join him on BBC WM.

November's book of the month

Les and Nick have chosen a thriller by George Mann called "Affinity Bridge", which is published by Snowbooks.

Investigator and royal agent Sir Maurice Newbury and his assistant Miss Veronica Hobbes are sent by Queen Victoria to investigate the mysterious crash of one of the royal airship fleet.

Set on the cusp of a new era of technology, the story's characters are dazzled each day by new inventions. Airships soar in the skies over the city, whilst ground trains rumble through the streets and clockwork automatons carry out menial tasks in the offices.

Amidst this highly strung atmosphere, the crash investigation unfolds.

“An engaging melodrama that rattles along at a breakneck pace”- The Guardian

“The author does a superb job of recreating nineteenth century London. Excellent world building; captures the Sherlock Holmes feel; never a boring passage. Bottom line: A hugely entertaining book. 4.5 out of 5."- SF Signal Industry Review

"A science fantasy novel that should appeal to lovers of both genres... one of the biggest surprises of the year and I can't recommend the book enough." - Fantasy Book Critic

The book review takes place at 2pm on BBC WM on Wednesday 26h November

Remember to tune in to Les Ross every weekday afternoon from 1pm-4pm on BBC WM 95.6FM. You can also listen live by clicking the link on the right of this page.
