They are looking for volunteers across Birmingham and the Black Country to work with children aged 6-11 who find reading a challenge and may need extra support and mentoring. Caslon Primary School in HalesowenCaslon Primary School need Green Team Volunteers. They have been working over the last 3 years to create a wildlife garden for the school and community to use. They are looking for people to help with the ongoing work, particularly between now and May to develop their allotment project. ![]() Play time at Handsworth Day Care Centre Volunteering with ChildLineChildline depends on thousands of volunteers from all over the UK who freely give up their time to help. Although many of their volunteers are trained to speak to children as counsellors, there are various roles such as working in schools and outreach, administration volunteers and raising funds. Full training and support is offered by ChildLine. Whizz KidsVolunteers are needed to help raise vital funds to give disabled children the independence to enjoy an active childhood. There are lots of ways to get involved like set up a fundraising group, coming up with an event of your own, helping to plan supermarket collections or to even become a speaker or ambassador for Whizz Kids. Birmingham HippodromeThe Hippodrome needs volunteers for their Front of House Volunteer Scheme. ![]() Helen Clare If you enjoy the theatre and can commit to an afternoon or evening each week, then this could be for you. St John AmbulanceSt John’s are looking for volunteer first aiders to help them provide cover at public events. You don't need to have done any previous first aid training to volunteer your time. First aid volunteers are given full training for their role, ranging from an induction to the organisation, through to how to deal with bites and stings and unconscious casualties! Age Concern HalesowenAge Concern need a driver and an escort to take a minibus out (in the Halesowen area) to collect clients for a day centre and later return them home. They should have CRB clearance or be willing to have a CRB check. Age concern uses two minibuses on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Drivers and escorts work on rota so they do not need to work everyday unless they want to. Expenses can be claimed on hire outs. ![]() Gail Harris and Maggie Smith RSVPRSVP is running a project in partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to recruit older volunteers to help children in primary schools make progress. They are aiming to recruit 50 volunteers in Solihull to work in local primary schools. The Thomas Pocklington TrustThis is a national charity providing housing, care and support services for people with sight loss in the UK. One of its centres – Pocklington Place, has recently opened in Northfield Birmingham. They are looking to recruit volunteers to help support their programme of activities and events, as well as to help with other areas of the centre such as our on site shop. There are various roles that you can volunteer for such as activity assistants, as a mentors, or even as foreign language teachers. These are just a few of the opportunities that they are recruiting for. ![]() Maggie Smith, Action Desk producer Cathedral CampsThis is a CSV-led project who run one week residential camps throughout the country in July and August. The camps work in Cathedrals and places of worship, maintaining, cleaning and restoring the buildings. Every year they need to recruit Leaders to support the young people that take part on the camps. The Leaders get training and expenses and hopefully have a whale of a time. They are not a religious organisation and generally attract young people who have an interest in architecture, or need to fulfil their residential DofE requirements.
