City theme park in the sky

If the plans are approved, the VTP200, a 200-metre high, £95 million vertical theme park will be built in Birmingham city centre. Have your say, below.

The planned VTP200 is a 200 metre high 'VerTiPlex' - a leisure and observation tower designed by architects RTKL. If they're given approval, they believe it can be built by 2010.

Developers Pettifer Estates say that external glass lifts will transport people from the shimmering gold base of the VTP200, with its hotel, café bars and restaurants, up the sides of the tower. A visit to the observation decks will offer breathtaking 360° views of the city and surrounding region up to a distance of 33 miles.

At the observation level visitors will be able to access three rides – Flight Trainer, Giant Drop and Seesaw - and four extreme activities – Walk of Fear, Sky Jump, Bungee Jump and Climb To The Top - designed exclusively for VTP200.

A more leisurely ride experience would be available in the slowly revolving glass Gyro Tower which rises as it turns to reach a record-breaking 190 metre height. The most intrepid could then complete the 10 metre climb to the very top.

The chosen location for the tower is next to Millennium Point in the 425 acre Eastside Regeneration area of Birmingham. It will overlook the proposed City Park, which is due to be completed around the same time.

"An exciting addition to the city skyline"

Cllr Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council said: “This bold and innovative building captures the vitality of Birmingham, the youngest city in Europe. It is a development which will boost our image as a global city, being an exciting addition to the city skyline.

"In addition, it will improve our local heart through the provision of jobs and inward investment. I firmly believe that VTP200 will further enhance Birmingham’s position on the world stage and attract visitors and investment."

See the plans

The plans and a scale model of the building can be seen at the Public Exhibition that will take place at Millennium Point from Saturday 15th – Saturday 22nd September, 10am – 5pm daily or by visiting the official website www.VTP200.com

After the plans for the VTP200 have been exhibited, a planning application is to be submitted to Birmingham City Council.

I think
it would be a great idea! I, an American, would travel to the UK in a heartbeat to do this! Nothing as good over here

ALI

paddy from birmingham

Sammy Quong
Fantastic, bring it on !!!!!!

Trish.
Fantasic .Wonderfull for the city,My family will love it.

Russell
Need to push the city onto the next stage. The 90's saw Birmingham surge forward with projects like Brindly Place but we then sat back & plans were constantly cancelled. This would be an internationally recognisable building.....come Brum!!!!

BCFC
This has to happen the building needs to be built so that it gets lids of the street and even the adults can join in.

Maha, Leeds
Yeah build it Birmingham needs to be brought into the modern times, Build it before 2010 so I can check if its high enough to chuck my husband off it!

David
Instead of this futuristic theme lets get a bit of the history of "Brum" told, even as a theme park..

Mirza
Why waste a fortune on something like this a good hospital would be better that will cater to the community & provide jobs for unemployed Doctors!!!!!

Just whats needed!!!!
This is just what the city and the country needs. We need to catch up with other countrys and citys such as China, Usa, Moscow. Build it!

rajni
pliz we nid som excitement in birmingham, !! we want it 2 b the best holiday destination for tourists and for people in b,ham ""

taz
birmingham desrve something like that so we need it. it make our city look even better

Hayley
Will be a great investment but there is no space, at least put it out the way brum needs a gd park though!

plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
GIVE IT TO BRIMGHAM PLZZZ ITS GUNNER BE SICK!

Second City
Birmingham is falling behind Manchester, and something needs to be done, bulding this would be a great start. Lets get on with it!!

Chrissy in Cornwall
I left Brum 13 years ago for Cornwall, and even now I still miss my City. This looks fantastic, even though I no longer live there I'm still proud to be a Brummie and hopefully one day will return for good - really looking forward to being a part of futuristic Birmingham if this is indicative of the way forward.

Ian Rollinson
Brill the more activaties in the city the better!!!

GARRY ASKEY
What a fantastic idea!!The capital of the region is ready to match other cities in Europe with another iconic building!

VASEEM
i think it is a great idea.itll make the city the most beutiful and attractive place in uk.

Stephanie
I think this is a relly really good idea.It would be a great tourism thing, also birmingham hasnt got anything 'wow' about it..so come on!

Birmingham Lover!
That is such a fantastic striking building!!!!... I think it would be such a good idea to have it placed next to millenium point and close to the bullring as this seems to be the more "modern" part of birmingham that is catering for shopping, education, entertainment. Why shouldnt Birmingham have such a great building... we have the new bullring!... and look at the media frenzy that caused!... The new beetham tower also looks fantastic! not mentioning the orion building... Birmingham had a bad reputation for being a concrete jungle back in the day all grey and dull. So wouldnt it be nice to have a new reputation of being one of the forerunners in architecture?... nightlife.. Shopping and forward thinking?

Steve
What's the point in doing up Birmingham when it is still full of enough people that will ruin this for everyone? I have very rarely been out in Birmingham when I haven't been disgusted at behaviour shown by my peers(16 - 25yr olds).Birmingham needs to tackle the problem of half of it population's disrespectful attitude towards each other before they start awarding them with facilities like this.

helen
apparently they aregoing to put one of these in Brighton as well. Brum needs money spent on improving bus services and tidying up the run down areas of the city.To build this tower and develop eastside they have also knocked down the Railway pub where Black Sabbath used to gig- so much for preserving heritage. Also Moseley Road Swimming pool is 100 years old now and in desperate need of repair- there are only 3 working pools like this left in the whole world- surely a tourist attraction. Why not preserve the beauty Brum already has ?

Tom
Amazing, building and would be great for birmingham. the more people we attract here, the more money can be spent on public transport. looks beautiful as well

Lynn T
Please please start investing this money into the residential areas of Birmingham. Give it to the people who live here, and have lived here for years, not to visitors who will be here for five minutes! What is the point of this when my family live in a part of Birmingham that has just been left to rot and has just gone downhill for the last 10 years and has become somewhere I am now ashamed to go back to

Jeanette Haywood - Castle Bromwich
It looks great, just like the one we stayed in at Las Vegas 'The Stratosphere'Lets hope that entrance fees etc are not sky high like the tower, then everyone will able to enjoy it.....

Richard
Judging by the comments above, I think it's about time Brummies started concentrating on their spelling, pronunciation and grammar - once we get that sorted perhaps the Second City will become something to be proud of! At this present moment in time all I come across is people that can't spell, can't enunciate, and have no clue as to sentence construction.Wake up Birmingham - I'm proud to live here, but I'm disgusted that no-one wants to step forward and learn, or practice, the Queen's English!

Amir,Birmingham
Wow what a brilliant idea! Wish I'd thought of it!!

Architects
right idea wrong finish£ better spent on public transport. Birmingham does not need cultural awards; 'expensive plaster to fill large cracks' we already know its a great city. This city prides itself in not copying any other city, its individual. Yes it can compete on a global level, but this looks like the jetsons. We can do much better as a city. Stop comparing Birmingham.

Zbig
Absolutely hideous! Like a giant hypodermic syringe sticking up into the sky. Why do planners think they can put up any old tat in Birmingham and get away with it? This wouldn't see the light of day in London or Manchester, or any other self-respecting city.

tom
it would look good in birmingham an they should have more thinks like that in birmingham

Anton Dey
I think that it is a very good idea in building the VTP 200 because it is good for tourists and etc. It will also be excellent for Birmingham!! I would say go for it. Hope u get the plan in doing it.

VILLA!
Yeah, great idea if hopefully it will happen UP THE VILLA!!

John Gillett Proud Brummie
Please build this before someone else gets the idea, this is what our city needs.Don't compromise with the height detail, that is the essence of the feature.Get on with it now.

Dizzy
Go for it Birmingham it looks wonderful

John
There will not be any investment in Birmingham. When was the last time the BBC supported this city, if they planned to build britains largest prison I would believe it.This idea will be stollen by the greed of the so called elite, in the shires.

Adam B birmingham
i think this would be a great idea it should go ahead and then us brummies can be even more proud of our city

nourish
it is so cool i wonder if they are going to make it for real if so that is so cool

cockney pete
well done brum go for it!but i think you're missing a trick, instead of being satisfied with the tag 'britain's second city'why not be 'the capital city of england'?

NIGEL STANFORD
ABOUT TIME LETS GIVE BIRMINGHAM A SKYLINE LIKE ANY OTHER MODERN CITY IN THE WORLD

Josh C
Sounds like a great idea, cant wait to go on the rides if it goes ahead

Gursewak Jakhu The Heights uce Student
I think this is a terrific plan i come to university here from leicester and i thought birmingham wasnt a very attractive place to be but this could change everything birmingham will become the best city in the world taking over new york london barcelona i love this city

mon parker
Futuristic, yeah why not, -go for it B'ham, you need a new angle.Best O luck.

kevin
hope its gets approved this looks stunning and would be excellent for bham, please bring it to bham it would be sooooooooooo cool

SARA
HOW AMAZING WOULD THAT BE!! TO HAVE A THEME PARK IN THE CITY JUST DOWN THE ROAD FROM MY HOUSE! THAT IS AN AMAZING IDEA YOU SHOULD MAKE THAT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THEN US "BRUMMIES" CAN BE THE PROUD OWNERS AND THE FIRST TO USE IT!!!!!

darrell
Fantasic News! The local council needs to give the green light on his project asap...along with this speeding up the regeneration programme for bham including in that more taller, striking projects to give our city a world class skyline like that we see in all other major citys around the world. The vtp 200 could be the kick start of a race into the skies for our great city!!!!

JayPeeDee
Along with the definite construction of 146m V-Tower, 138m Snow Hill Twin Towers and the iconic Cube, this shows the ambition of Birmingham. Brummies should be proud and embrace this fantastic opportunity!

Fergus Clancy
Blackpool yes,Birmingham no!

cyril
looks wicked, love it to happen but nothing good every happens in birmingham, probably end up down south

Greg
Best idea I've seen for a long time. Go for it!!

Farooq
This is exactly the type of ambition Birmingham should be showing...brummies are very proud and passionate about their city - please (to the powers that be!) make this happen! ps. we should also get Ozzy Osbourne to open the tower ;)

Kevin
Great ideajust watch for all the objections from the so called second cityBrum a city to be proud to live in

Helen, Birmingham
How Scarey...! Im a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to heights but having looked at the plans and artists impressions and reading the review of the plan I would definitely have to give the rides ago - its sounds FANTASTIC and I will be one curious person to visit this building! Great news for Birmingham and its about time this GREAT city had something like this.

Sid B20
This is spot on. Build it and they will come!

erica
looks fantastic just like the one in Las vegas

Abz
Surely this scheme should be given the go ahead, after all the other great projects being cancelled. Birmingham deserves such landmarks but is unfortunate to have a very 'strict' planning dept. Cities like Manchester have greatly benefited from landmark developments, only recently the countries tallest residential building opened in Manchester. The revive of the Bullring was meant to be start of regenerating Birmingham, making it a global player, lets commit to that promise and create a world class city to be proud of.

Adam
I think this is a brillant venture. Likemay on here - I would like to see Birmingham put on the map and we should have more things to be prod about todispell wat others might thunk.I would definately like to see the tower to be bigger though! Lets really break the record!!!!

Nic
I'd be quite keen to visit Birmingham if this went ahead.

dazmac
Birmingham is such an underrated city. A project like this with more ambitious projects to follow will give the city more status. Birmingham itself though needs to be advertised and portrayed more effectively through the media channels for it to become a truly recognised city of fun and vibrance. Birmingham and areas within such as Brindley Place and the Arcadian are truly great places, but almost all outside of the locality have never even heard of them. Promoting this great city with this new project would be a great leap forward.

andrew leadbeater
great idea but a lot of the citys money again .if its used it will be good for the city and the surrounding areas .but do we need it ????

tracy
Doesnt look much like a theam park but the idea sounds good hope all the plans go forward

Mohamed
I love Birmingham and to get such a great icon in the city would make other people love it as much as we do

Brett
Great, but i get the feeling like all projects we propose it will have serious objections from the southern mafia who will no doubt see this as taking much needed tourism and capital from the south east.Go for it, great for GTR B'ham and lets build more sky scraping projects to project us where we should be on the world stage and not held back by the ignorant.

ahmed
this is a toppping for bham its just what the second city needs please go ahead with it.it looks great

Gécika
I think it's a second great plan of architecture after renoving few years ago the Bullring. I am in France right now and I am coming quite often..so can't harldy wait the real view!! when it will be finished

sati
i think it is great

Paulus
Fantastic - excellent idea in a prefect place - looks great too. Please let this go through City Council planners - no dilly-dallying on this one. You've got a company that wants to built something this fantastic that will bring jobs and kudos. It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Dan 'Fishy' Higham
Come on. I gonna jump off it for a bunggee jmup. Up the blues.

xxx
i think that da thing would be gd

David Sequenci
This looks fantastic!

Paul Bennington
Great idea, can't wait to try out the rides

Simon
Interesting idea, but the council and us will need to clean up our act - or all you will be able to see from the top is smog - also will it withstand more exreme weather?

Duncan Webb
Its not high enough !

Phil Palmer
In the next few years Londonwill have a few buildings over 200 metres, one (The London Bridge Tower) will be over 300 metres. Countries all over the world have plans for very tall exotic buildings, VTP200 needs to be taller to make a truly globel impact as your report implies.Hope the council planners will give VTP 200 the go a head and allow the tower to 320 meters

Glenys
Well if this project goes ahead, lets hope that the transport department gets their act together, having 4 lines of traffic all going in the same direction, is a night mare. the money spent on this project could be spent on the moorstreet queensway making sure that when all transport needs to get out of the City Centre it can do so. at present its jam solid. Its a joke the whole of the transport route in and out of the City centre needs to be looked at.

DENNIS SHERGOLD
our city should go up in the world----go for it BRUM.

mike
Bring it to the city ! This is the sort of thing Birmingham needs to put itself as a BIG international city that it should always have been !

Martyn Hood
Excellent idea. Get it built. However for an observation tower it is fairly short.

Joey Cassidy
Just the kind of innovative building Birmingham needs to dispell the myth of brum as a drab industrial city. Hopefully this is not just another idea that will come to nothing.

Nick, Birmingham.
This is fantastic if it does go ahead, but we've seen tall buildings announced that have come and disappeared into obscurity. There was supposed to be a tower at Merry Hill, there was going to be an 'entertainment' tower built over near millennium point and many others. And as yet, nothing. Come on Brum!

Jon Wooldridge
These are the kind of developments Birmingham needs if it wants to keep its 'international city' status - shame it's not higher! Situated next to the planned City Park and regenerated Eastside, this will prove to be a great world class attraction in a world class location.

mandy phull
i thinks its another brilliant attraction that birmingham will have to offer

Brian John
Brilliant-just what the City needs to boost Eastside and draw in visitors to the area and also to the wider City region.
