Well if you did you would have noticed that Birmingham girl group Nu- Life received an award, for their self-titled debut album.

The trio beat off stiff competition from musical heavy-weights such as Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary, to take home the Best Gospel Act Award.

The Mobo Awards was set up 11 years ago to highlight the achievements of black music. Since then it has also helped increase the exposure of home grown talents such as Ms Dynamite, Lemar, Jamelia, Estelle, Kano and Sway to name a few.

Black UK talent traditionally struggles to penetrate the UK music charts, leaving many like successful duo Floetry to take their music to the states.

Nu Life have been a household name in the Gospel circuit for a long time. The girls, Dionne Williams-Hepburn, Maryanne Hepburn-Bean and Estella Ible have a passion for performing and entertaining with their vocation to minister about their Christian faith.

Their unique brand of gospel music has mass appeal and is a soul stirring, foot-tapping, vitalising experience for all who listen to their renditions of smooth R&B ballads and worship songs; which explains why they won a Mobo.

Maryanne from the group says she didn’t expect to win:

“We were very surprised. We never went down with the intention that we were going to win. It was nice to just get nominated.

When they called out our names, Stella and I just looked at each other in amazement”.

Estella adds:

“We were just thrilled to win, it was such an opportunity and a privilege to be there and experience the whole event.”

Dionne, the third member of the group was unable to attend the award ceremony as she recently had a baby. However, Maryanne says she was not forgotten on the night:

“We gave a shout out to Dionne and her new little baby Zoe; we wished she was there with us.

We thanked God and our husbands for their support, and recognised our management and record label."

Nu Life’s album was produced by Birmingham based record label 5am records, which is the brain child of musical talents Tony Bean and Michael Grant (Musical Youth).

The duo have produced for many top artists, including multi-platinum selling artist Usher, Kelly Rowland (Destiny's Child) and Lemar.

According to the girl’s manager, Beresford Dawkins, the phone has been constantly off the hook since their Mobo win.

The skies the limit for Nu Life, keep your eyes peeled for this Birmingham trio.
