Clare Short calls for HP boycott

Ladywood MP Clare Short has asked people to boycott HP products in response to the decision to close the Aston HP Foods Factory. Listen to the interview, hear from residents and have your say.

Call to boycott HP products

Clare Short MP has asked Birmingham residents to boycott all HP products, following the news that the famous Aston HP Foods Factory is to close.

Heinz announced that the site is no longer financially viable and that production of the HP Sauce brand will be moved to Holland, in a decision that will result in 125 job losses.

Speaking on BBC WM's Breakfast Show with Daz Hale, the former cabinet minister said:

"It seems like another week, another closure. The really worrying thing is that it's the good jobs that are going... all we're left with is lower paid, insecure work.

"The factory has been there for heaven knows how long. It has pictures of the House of Commons on it. And suddenly they're saying they're removing it from our country."

Clare Short went on to ask Birmingham locals to boycott all HP products, in the hope that the rest of the country would follow suit.

"That's what they deserve," she said. "It would give them a real fright. If we can make them reconsider that would be brilliant."

Locals speak out

Following the news of the closure, we spoke to local community members to get their reactions to the plans.

Brian Young, who worked at the site over 30 years ago, is shocked by the announcement.

"It's all change," he said. "They have ripped the heart out of Brummagem. So much history is wrapped up in that place. It meant a lot to all of us round hear. When people thought of Aston they thought of the HP Plant.

"I'm a Brummie born and bred. My dad used to tell stories of going to work on the bus and opening his sandwiches just to smell the sauce!"

Terry Barritt

Pauline Flower also recalls how her children used to love the distinct Heinz sauce smell.

"The kids were raised on HP sauce!" she says. "My youngest went through a phase of sausage, chips and tomato sauce. And it had to be Heinz! It's such a shame that it's all going abroad. It'll never taste the same again."

Other residents though are more angry about what appears to be another blow for local industry.

Kim McIlhone

Kim McIlhone

Terry Barritt, a former metal polisher from Aston, has lived in Brum all of his life.

"I feel the grief," he says. "I blame the government entirely. This is another blow for British and Birmingham industry. After everything we've all been through with Rover, they do this.

"HP stands for Houses of Parliament. But they'll keep that name won't they? HP is part of our legacy around here. Now our history is going abroad."

Local small-businesses are worried too; a sandwich shop and newsagents are opposite the site and many of the workforce are regular customers. But Kim McIlhone, manager of local pub O'Reilly's, has had a long standing relationship with the factory.

Trevor Weir

Trevor Weir

"This is the local for a lot of the workforce. Over the years many of them have become friends. We're a hotel too and often visitors to the site would always stay here. We've had some great times but that is all about to change."

Some people though aren't as upset as others. Trevor Weir will be sad to see the plant go but deems it inevitable.

"It's sad of course," he said. "I'm shocked as well. But they've been scaling down the site for a while now. I think most people could see this coming, if they were really honest. It's just so much easier - and cheaper - to manufacture abroad now."

Nad Ghaffar

Nad Ghaffar

Taxi driver Nad Ghaffar agrees, but feels sorry for the families of the workers affected.

"Everything's going abroad now," he says. "The decision has be made now so that's that. Times change. But I just feel sorry for the workers' families; it will affect a lot of people, especially if they find it hard to get another job."

Have Your Say

Do you think that we should all boycott HP products?

The BBC reserves the right to edit comments submitted.

Paul
Absolutely we should boycott all HP/Heinz products, after all it's not the same product now that it's made in the Netherlands instead of Aston. And P1NSEEKER needs to get his/her facts right as I know for a fact that the factory was very profitable so it's not the same as Rover, which made huge losses for many years.

tony
i have now stopped buying any of heinz products inc h p sauce

diane wheeler
i will not be buying any hp products ever again

Roger Clark
I live in Vancouver, Canada and I will be not be buying HP again !

David Robinson
I've noticed that they are trying to hide the fact that it's made abroad on the lable now also on Daddies as well, havn't bought any of that as well, is there a good UK produced alternative

Graham
Branstons beans tomato sauce and brown sauce are excellent there is no need to buy heinz products, boycott there soups as well

Jamie.
Yep, without a doubt, we should boycott HP Sauce. It will be a hardship as I am addicted to the stuff, but if we don't take a stand, then we'll suffer more redundancies down the line as more manufacturing is switched to cheaper countries. Not only should we boycott HP Sauce to show solidarity with the workers in Birmingham, we should also boycott TV stations that advertise the stuff or have shows where the characters are using it. It's the media Heinz will listen to most.

Edith hornbridge
Absolutely. Hp sauce is a brand that has lived off its English/British iconic status. It's synonymous with our culinary austere tastes. Well i won't be buying it. Boycotting means that other companies may reconsider. Anyway, if there's an alternative... take it.

Mrs P Gardner
I certainly will not be buying any more HP products. I will not support any firm which makes British workers redundant

Richard
Buy british to support what's left of the UK manufacturing industry. I shall be boycotting HP.

Paul
I've removed all Heinz products from my cupboard and will not be buying any in the future, apart from (reluctantly) the sauce. And P1nseeker please get your facts right, HP sauce is in fact a highly profitable product. This is nothing more than corporate beancounters who have no regard for anyone or anything but the bottom line.

John Alston
imagine ferrari moving prduction to turkey . it just wouldnt happen. other countries value their national institutions, and so should we.

Kim Fennell of Rugby
I love HP sauce but will not buy it any more

P1NSEEKER
1)How is boycotting Heinz/Hp going to help anything? The very reason they are closing the factory is because it is "no longer finacially viable" meaning they arent selling enough to justify the higher wages etc they pay in this country. You should have all been buying more HP years ago and then the factory would still be going strong. Not refusing to buy an allready struggling product. It was the same with Rover, the reason they went out of business is because the cars were nowhere near good enough to compete with foreign competitors. The problem with this country is people who are too stuck in the past and looking at british industry through rose tinted spectacles instead of moving forward and taking the rest of the world on at their own game and try to regain our status as a world leader in innovation. 2)I just hope the Dutch dont change the taste of my favourite sauce!

Stephen Wallin
Yes... NO Heinz, there are plenty of better products made in the UK, without buying US owned goods.

Darren
Boycott all Heinz brands. Branston are a good alternative. Govt cant make them stay (unless they offer them loads of money/tax breaks) but perhaps could make them remove Houses of Parliament from their bottles.

Jonathan Parkes
Unless we show the suits what happens when they do such crass and insensitive things they will do far worse. No more HP for me.

gordon h baker
i went to school next door in 1939 gran lived in park rd keep it going

Brendan - widnes
yeh boycott heinz you can get Branston beans now HP to good to give up all shops should stop selling Heinz

HP Fan - Manchester
Boycotting HP will only make Heinz's decision "justifiable". What we should be doing is continue to by HP but boycott the HEINZ brand. There are now good alternatives for ketchup and beans, so changing from their core brands will hurt more.

stephen wicketts
ok anyone get the feeling there noving everythink out of brition britions going to become a land of farmers and shop owners failing that just live of the goverment

T.Newman
Yes, But at the end of the day it won't do much now. The Goverment should have done something about this mths ago. They knew as did I and I don't even work there. STOP the greedy GOV

David Harris
Everyone should boycott all Heinz products, especially HP sauce. If there sales fall enough then their decision will be a financial disaster and may change there mind. (Please note: Daddies is a HP brand)

Denise Bucknall
AS A FAMILY BORN AND BREAD HERE IT WILL BE VERY SAD TO SEE IT GO. THE SMELL IS JUST SOMETHING WE ALL KNOW WHEN YOU ENTER ASTON.

Caroline Arnold
We must make a stand and stop all our jobs being aloud to go abroad what will be left for our childrens future the dole and poverty it is a frighting thought.

alan howe
i work at the factory and i wish to thank you for your support.

S. Hussain - Birmingham
I've watched closely over the years, everything that we pride in being 'British' is being taken away from us, be it in the name of profit, greed, technology advances etc. We are continuously told to integrate, be culturally aware etc before we know it we will not belong to anything or be known by anything! Politicians just DO NOT think the best for its country or people.

Isabel Caplin
Yes! I also think we should boycott all Heinz products. From one report I read it seems that there was an agreement to keep the production of the sauce in the UK. Hit Heinz were it hurts - right in the profit margin!

Patricia ,TORONTO
very sad news about HP , I will still by HP my bacone and eggs and homefries would never be the same , I remember the smell today, as my Nan lived not far from there also the ITV studio was in that area ,Im in Toronto now and when I see the HP sauce bottle the smell comes back with some nice memories

an HP brummie
People power is the answer to this. I appeal to the British nation to boycott as far as possible all heinz products until, they change their minds

Wayne
I remember growing up around the HP sauce factory. You could smell it for miles around. This ia an absolute tragedy that the place is closing down. Why are the goverment unable to act to stop things like this happening. Look at Telewest / NTL then all the banks. If this was France there would be rioting in the streets. Howm much longer is this going to go on for?

R-force1
dont u get it by now companies are out to make profit not to care about what happens to there staff

Paul Smith
I have no connection of Birmingham or Heinz but I think it should stay here, its a greta British product and it wont be the same anymore if it goes abroad. Heinz please keep HP here.

Stuart Russell
Yet another national disgrace! Most certainly there should be a boycott, but as well as all HP brand products, everyone in Britain should also boycott every Heinz product too. This latest closure of a long established UK company is another fall down the slippery slope, in the not too distant future the UK will be like a third world nation which has to import everything, GB should be named "Little Britain"

Leonard Emery
It seems to me that the powers that be are running down Birmigham the midlans area what is central governments agenda in allowing this to happen

CHAVDA
ITS SO SAD, TO SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN TO AN ITEM WHICH IS SO POPULAR AND IN GREAT DEMAND BY THE BRITISH PEOPLE HOPE AND PRAY THAT THIS PRODUCT OF ENGLAND H.P SAUCE AND OTHER VARITIES WILL REMAIN HERE IN BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND

gursh chana
this is a disgrace and we all have to move on but traditions and a going concern like HP needs to be kept in Birmingham and Britain. The unions and governments are always too late

Kuldip Sharma
Boycott is in order .A part of England is being taken away. Even in India, I would expect people not to use HP.It won't be what we relished

Jen
I had already decided to boycott HP products so well done for Clare Short for raising the issue.

Patrick Culleton
Yes, definitely. It is very worrying that all this country's manufacturing history is being sold off to the highest bidder just to make a short-sighted swift buck.

Bill Gleeson
Another symptom of short term thinking. If this kind of action keeps up where are the workers of this country going to work to afford to buy imported sauces never mind cars etc.

james mensar
Ithink they should keep it british, but like other people say it due to who's running the country to why everything is going abroard

KEITH JENNEY
I GREW UP IN TOWER ROAD ASTON WENT TO UPPER THOMAS STREET SCHOOL ALL WITH IN THE SMELL OF AND EVERY THING THAT WAS "HP" MY MOM & DAD HOME EVEN HAD 6ft OF THERE VINAGAR IN THE CELLAR ON ONE SEPT NIGHT WHEN THE VATS NEXT TO OUR HOUSE BURST ASTON WILL ONT BE THE SAME WITH OUT THAT SMELL,IT WAS THE SAME WHEN ANSELLS WENT! MY GRANDAD AND MOST OF MY EARLY FAMILY WORK FOR "HP" just another nail.
