Scout and about!

By Sarah Loat
Birmingham welcomes its very first Muslim Scout Group - read on and join the adventure!

Scout Facts

  • Scouting is the largest youth movement in the world with over  26 million members.
  • Almost a third of the world's Scouts are Muslims.
  • Scouting in the UK is committed to co-education so that boys and girls can meet the aims of scouting through one programme.
  • The aim of scouting is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials.
  • Scouting celebrates its 100th birthday in 2007 at a jamboree to be held in the UK.

Scouting isn't all just about "bob-a-job" and camping. It's the largest youth movement in the world providing a range of activities and education - and a whole lot of fun for the 26 million young people - boys and girls - who are members world wide.

Islamic ethos

Scouting has always been tied to faith and religion, and in the UK most commonly associated with Christianity. Scouts around the world are of lots of different faiths; Sikh, Muslim, Hindu. Now Birmingham has it's own Muslim Scouts geared towards, but not exclusively for, Muslim children in Birmingham which will impart Islamic knowledge to children in a fun and exciting way.

The essence of good scouting is dedicated and enthusiastic leaders who are all volunteers from their local community. Birmingham Scout Leader Abdullah is oozing with these qualities and spent the whole scout launch day running around with boundless energy getting kids involved in cooking, playing games, football, and learning traditional scout skills such as team-working, tent-pitching and knot-tying.

"Scouting is like a complete school - children learn a whole range of skills and become a useful part of their communities. All scouts are encouraged to develop spiritually and all kinds of religions are represented in scouting. It's great that we now have a Muslim Scout group with an Islamic ethos for the children in Birmingham.

The Scout launch day in Birmingham gave children and parents a taster of all the activities Scouts get up to which cover activities such as Faith, Beliefs and Attitude, Relationships, Community and Surroundings and The Outdoors. Boys and girls can gain awards in all of these areas and are presented with badges and certificates when successful.

Zakariya 10, Souhei 9, and Abu 11 were all really excited by the scouting experience and were tucking into some apple crumble before dashing off to learn how to put up a tent and tie knots; "Scouts is fun - we'll be camping and making things."

Amar aged 10 was having an indoor kick-a-bout with lots of other new scout recruits; "My dad and my mom said want me to know how to climb and stuff like that. I think it'll be really good there'll be fun things to do."

Sohail aged 7 said "Scouts is fun! I want to do climbing and play with other children. Today I had my face painted and went on the bouncy castle."

Raza - Sohail's father said "Kids should get out more - they all play computer games and aren't active enough. I think Scouts is a great opportunity for them to get out and learn at the same time - and it's important that they learn about their religion too."
