Drag Race UK winner: 'I'm going to take on the world'

The winner of RuPaul's Drag Race UK series three on her victory - and what she'd like to do after appearing on the BBC Three show.

After another spectacular series of singing, dancing and drama, the latest winner of Drag Race UK has been announced as Krystal Versace.

Krystal - the youngest-ever winner in the history of Drag Race - was just 19 when she won the crown and became "the UK's Next Drag Superstar".

"Oh my god!" the drag performer said at a finale event in London hosted by comedian Judi Love on Thursday evening. "I feel like I'm in a dream. It feels a bit surreal."

"Honestly, I would never have thought I'd win the show," the drag performer from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, tells BBC Three. "It's mind-blowing to me.

"Anyone that is born to do drag out there and is the next superstar, can now have someone they can look at and be like, 'Okay, right I can do it.'"

Krystal, who has been doing drag since she was 13, made an early first impression by winning the first two challenges of the series, earning praise from the judges for her runway looks and her dancing skill in the Dragoton challenge. 

Before Krystal lip synced for the crown in the final episode, host RuPaul said: "She is only 19. She's still trying to find her footing and this competition has really put her to the test.

"All three girls bring something special to this competition, Krystal has used her short time on this planet to put that laser focus on drag."

"From the jump we couldn't take our eyes off of Krystal," judge Michelle Visage added. "She's always wowed us - and that's a gift."

"I think this competition has unleashed something in her," fellow judge Graham Norton added.

Krystal wins a crown and sceptre plus an all-expenses paid trip to Hollywood, where she will create and star in her own series with the producers of RuPaul's Drag Race.

After her win, Krystal's mum Michelle joined her on stage to hug her and say: "I'm just very overwhelmed and very proud. 

"[Krystal] is such a strong character. We've always been there for him. This was his goal. We were just for him all the way, whatever he chose to do in life. This is just a bit of a dream."

Krystal says there were "so many amazing moments" from her time on Drag Race UK. But she points to her chat with RuPaul on the runway as a particular highlight.

"The moment with Ru on the main stage was incredible when she said that I was born for drag. That was a stamp of approval. That was incredible.

"It completely surprised me. She looked at me like I was her baby.

"She's seen so much drag so it meant a lot for her to take her time to talk to me and respect my art."

Krystal says Drag Race continues to connect with fans because "it's always being reinvented. It's always refreshing and new every time it comes on."

Finalist Kitty Scott-Claus adds: "I was such a huge fan of the show before I was on it and I feel like I'll continue to be for years to come because it's so important to have such a popular, positive, queer programme on mainstream telly."

Krystal adds that she became "such good friends" with all of the queens on series three.

And finalist Ella Vaday agrees: "It was like we were just mates that were going into a studio every day and just having a laugh.

"Krystal is our baby and we're so proud of her."

This year's series - which saw guest judges including Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Spice Girl Emma Bunton - broke new ground with the inclusion of female contestant, Victoria Scone, who left the show after injuring her leg.

"There's no boundaries to drag," Krystal says. "It's so exciting to see new drag, so why not show it all?"

So what's next for the young drag performer?

"I'm going to keep evolving because I'm not done here, this is literally just the start. In five years, I'm going to be completely different.

"I'm going to take on the world. I want to tour the world. And be the best of the best."
