Here's a new twist to the trend of restaurants serving up food in novel and unusual ways.

A restaurant in Birmingham has been fined Β£50,000 for presenting food on wooden boards, in defiance of a hygiene improvement notice from health inspectors.

The officials had visited the restaurant in October 2016 following allegations of a food poisoning outbreak. They told the owners they had concerns about the cleanliness of the wooden boards, but when the inspectors returned two months later for a check-up, they found the wooden plates still being used.

Birmingham City Council said the wooden boards were "incapable of being cleaned", and ordered the restaurant owners to pay Β£670 costs and Β£120 victim surcharge, in addition to the five-figure fine.

This news comes a few months after a survey of British people's views on unconventional serving options, which showed the old fashioned plate was still deemed the most acceptable thing to eat your food off, external. Using some of the more outlandish examples available on Twitter, the survey showed that a jar, shovel, dog bowl and shoe were classed as the least acceptable.
