Martin, a young vicar traumatised by his time abroad as a missionary, returns to England and is rewarded by his bishop with a comfortable parish in rural England.
However, the village is also home to the ancient rite of 'Bottlekicking', in which, every Easter, Chapworth's inhabitants take on those of the neighbouring village in a brutal no-rules fight on church land. Martin, tired of violence, refuses to sanction the 'pagan' custom this year. Little does he realise the fury his decision will unleash.
The villagers believe that Bottlekicking is an important fertility ritual, upon which their agricultural prosperity depends. What's more, their forefathers have performed the rite for over a thousand years - and fifty generations of ghosts will not lie down and let this troublesome parson endanger their community...
