Bill tells Sean he is planning a birthday meal for Mary tonight and they can ask Kamla to come too. They can go to a nice Japanese restaurant in town. Bill heads upstairs to tell Mary what the plan is but she isn’t too impressed. She would rather have had a party and only cancelled it because Bill wouldn’t invite Mani. Bill says there’s no point going over all that again besides Kamla will be there. Mary thinks that’s just great. She can’t spend her birthday with Mani who is one of her oldest friends but it’s alright for Kamla to be there! Mary pours herself another glass of wine.
Mary is a little tipsy when she and Bill arrive and gets annoyed when Bill wants to have a cigarette before going in. Bill points out it’s no different from Mary and her wine in fact she seems to be drinking during the day quite regularly. His cigarettes help him cope. Mary wonders if he means coping with her or could it be Bill thinks smoking will bring Fatima back to life again. Bill angrily puts his cigarette out as Kamla and Sean approach.
As soon they get inside Mary orders a double whiskey on the rocks. Bill suggests it’s a bit early but Mary ignores him. Kamla thinks it’s a shame the birthday party got cancelled but Mary says she couldn’t care less. Right now every day is a struggle and she doesn’t have anything to get up for. Kamla thinks Mary is referring to handing the pub over to Sean but Bill knows the comment was directed at him and excuses himself. Once Bill has gone Mary tells Kamla they are like strangers now and have been since Fatima’s death. Mary then downs her drink and heads off too saying Bill isn’t the only one who needs a cigarette.
Kamla fills Sean in on what happened and says they have to do something. They can enlist Mani’s help too. Sean reminds Kamla that Bill is suspicious of Mani so that wouldn’t work. Kamla is right though. They can’t watch Mary and Bill throw everything away like this. Kamla agrees but where do they even start?
