Have your say
Krishan is collecting pennies for the guy, but hoping for a few pound coins at least. He sees a crowd forming by the canal and heads there hoping for some more donations. He pushes through and asks Fran what’s going on. She tells him to go home, not wanting him to see anything unpleasant but Krishan isn’t easily deterred. She realises he’ll hear about it anyway so she explains that they think there might be a body in the canal.
Mary is worried sick and wishes the police would clear away all the rubberneckers who are enjoying the excitement. Jodie is in a terrible state and nothing Mary or Fran can say will calm her down. What if she never has a chance to make things right with her dad?
Krishan is keeping close eye on the police divers and when they drag something from the canal he runs over. He yells back that it’s definitely a body. Then Krishan gasps as he recognises the dead man … ‘it’s Birdyman’ he cries in shock. Relieved, Fran calls back to Jodie, who is rooted to the spot, that it’s not Mani. When Jodie has taken this in she turns on Fran. It might not be Mani, but a man’s still dead. So why is Fran so delighted? Jodie reckons Fran was feeling guilty for the events she’s sparked off. As their argument gets more and more heated Mary comforts Krishan; Birdyman was his friend.
Before the crowd disperses Krishan begins his collection again, but this time he’s collecting for Birdyman’s funeral. He’s shocked when Jodie shoves a large bundle of notes into his tin. He was their neighbour she explains to Krish, and he deserves a proper send off. Krishan tells her sadly how Birdyman used to leave little presents for him, and how he always spoke the truth. Kamla used to make sure he got a proper meal every now then, but they could have done more. He reckons Birdyman was lonely and wonders how he ended up alone without his family. Krishan asks Jodie, what if Mani ends up like Birdyman? Jodie reassures him, Mani isn’t alone like Birdyman, because he’s got her.
