Kamal apologises to Halima, he has made everything worse for her, he should have kept his distance from Azhar.
Azhar threatens Kamal, Farida’s son will pay for his betrayal unless he tells the elders that he has changed his mind otherwise he will kill him and take Halima anyway.
Kamal explains in his letter to Zak that the elders who led the jirgah in the Mosque were the most respected people in the community. During the jirgah, Kamal gave his side of the story but Azhar constantly interrupted him saying that living in the West has twisted his morals and that he was untrustworthy.
Kamal noticed that other witnesses were also being called and they mentioned that Azhar had been taking protection money off them and others saw about him meeting with the Taliban and bribing the guards and police. The elders then spoke about how a lady was raped and her son sent away to become like the Taliban. The elders concluded that Azhar was raising money to fight the Americans and that he wanted the camp closed so he was arrested by army guard soldiers who drove him to Afghanistan.
Kamal’s letter says that he would never have found his family if it wasn’t for people in Silverhill. They can be taken back to the border anytime but in the meantime, he is taking classes in the camp and helping people read and write.
Zak pauses when he talks about their wedding. He then tells Sean that Kamal mustn’t know about Fatima, he will blame himself as the raid happened after the fake passport, Kamal has finally found happiness.
