Have your say
Kamal wakes to his mother mopping his brow after having a nightmare about Azhar. He tells his mother what Azhar’s demands are. Najeela is hysterical, she can’t lose both her son and daughter now. Kamal also discovered that he was a Taliban. He wants to take Halima to the West with his money, trade drugs from Afghanistan and send the money back to fight the Americans and British. Kamal thinks of ways out, maybe he could give him all of his money, maybe they could escape, but Najeela confirms that all the Afghans know each other in Pakistan, they would never make it. Azhar would shoot him or get him locked up by the authorities. It seems like Halima has heard everything and agrees to marry Azhar, it’s the only way out but Kamal says he won’t let it come to that.
Later, Kamal bravely visits Azhar who is joyful at the thought of marrying Halima. Kamal confesses that he’s not ready to get married and he also wants his sister to be happy and decide who she marries. Azhar is angry, what is there to decide, he has money and security. Azhar is horrified, he has protected Kamal’s family and this is how he is being treated? There are enemies everywhere and without his protection, they will be killed and his money and sister taken. If he wasn’t paying the guards and the police, they’d all be in Afghanistan by now. As Kamal leaves Azhar warns him to think about his betrayals and what will happen to his family.
Kamal was more confused now, if the authorities were in Azhar’s pockets, he had ruined everything for his mother and sister by coming back. Farida comes running towards him with joy, her son may be saved, thanks to him. When she hears Kamal’s predicament, she is strong enough and determined to help and will tell everyone what Azhar did to her and her family.
At the hut, Kamal tells Najeela that Farida has gone to the elders to set up a jirgah but the elders want protection so they won’t listen to her. Kamal thinks he will just have to apologise to Azhar, there is no hope.
