Have your say
Kamal recalls in his letter to Zak that he couldn’t believe his luck when he found his mother and sister, however, he had strong suspicions about Azhar.
Kamal is at Azhar’s home and whenever he tries to delve into Azhar’s background, Azhar changes the subject. As Azhar heads out, he demands that his sister has the lunch ready for when he returns. He tells Kamal that she will make a good wife but finding a decent man is hard, he should know, he has a sister of his own.
Kamal helps Halima with a standpipe and they end up having a water fight until someone stops them in their tracks. A woman called Farida needs help with some documents. Halima knows that Farida’s husband was killed and her son was sent to a Quranic school because she couldn’t look after him.
Later, Kamal meets Farida who first asks him whether he is a friend of Azhar’s. She needs Kamal’s help in moving her son to another madrassa because the one he is in teaches them to fight against the Americans. Farida explains that Azhar sent her son away. He taunted her and touched her when her husband died and then sent her son away. Kamal sees how distressed Farida is and says he will try and do his best to help.
Kamal heads back only to find others who want help too. He can’t believe how word gets around so quickly. Kamal tries to help them with problems on receiving post, money reaching relatives abroad but when they offer money, he refuses. He is forced to keep the money of those who insist, that is a godsend as it’s more than what Halima would have made on the loom in a week.
During the week, Kamal bumps into Azhar who has heard of his money making skills. Azhar reckons they should set up business together. Kamal plucks up the courage to ask Azhar if he wants something in return. Azhar laughs saying they have an arrangement, he looked after his family which makes them brothers and as men protect their women, he will marry Halima and Kamal will marry his sister.
