Kamal slept for a whole day and was delighted at waking up to his mother and sister.
He stepped out of the hut to Azhar who invites him down to the fire later and offers to take him to Peshawar to get some papers of identification. Kamal is very grateful at his kindness.
Kamal enjoys breakfast with his mum and sister. He asks them about life after Khalid died. Najeela and Halima recall it was difficult and making ends meet was tough but they were lucky enough to have the loom so they weave carpets to make a living. They explain that they have no friends, they just stay close to the people from their valley.
Azhar takes Kamal to Peshawar to get his papers but Azhar can’t understand why Kamal is worried when he’s done it all before with the fake passport besides, he has money if he gets caught. Kamal can’t believe that Azhar knows about the bribe. According to Azhar, money and a gun are the only ways to get what you want. As Kamal waits outside the shop, Azhar returns with his papers leaving Kamal to wonder how Azhar got them so easily.
At the fire, Azhar introduces Kamal to everyone. Kamal is portrayed as the person who can help them with problems abroad. Kamal senses that people are afraid of Azhar. By the end of the evening Kamal thinks some people were unsure about him and some just wanted to be his friend because they figured he’d be rich coming over from England. Kamal gets a chance to tell his story and offers to help them with reading and writing or with the system in Pakistan. He didn’t want the people to think he wasn’t one of them.
Back at the hut, Halima is asleep. Kamal talks to his mum about Azhar and is shocked to hear that Azhar heard about his arrival before his mother and sister did. Najeela explains that Azhar is trouble, he has connections everywhere and no one even knows whether he is Taliban or a spy. When Kamal hears that Azhar charges his mother and sister for protection, he wonders if he is in danger if he doesn’t give Azhar what he wants.
