Zak and Sean open the post to discover a letter in Kamal’s handwriting. They both sit comfortably to have a long read. Zak understands that Kamal will refer to Fatima in the letter but he just wants to know if he is ok. Kamal first thanks them for everything they did for him, he’s had a tough time but is ok and then starts to recall his journey.
At Islamabad airport, Kamal is practicing his new name as he approaches the Customs Officer. He was pretending to be a Pakistani but he knew he looked like an Afghan refugee. Kamal is caught off guard when the Customs Officer wants to know the purpose of his visit and where he will be staying. It was hard to keep his story together but they eventually let him through.
Kamal realised he was free in Pakistan now, yet why did he feel so alone? He had no idea where to start looking for his mother and sister so he decided on the town that was closest to his old home in Kandahar. Travelling on the bus made him feel sick. He also saw many beggars and wondered if his mother and sister were doing the same to survive.
Kamal asks about his family in various places until he comes across someone called Soriya living in an Afghan ghetto who knew Halima. Soriya explains that she looked after his mother and sister and they became pretty close but when the army closed their camp down, they were sent to Peshawar. Kamal is gutted, he was closer to them than he knew when he was in Islamabad, he’ll have to go back.
An exhausted Kamal is stopped by Omar, a camp guard at the refugee camp. Omar won’t let him into camp without his papers so Kamal bribes him with money. It was the only way to be let in, he just hoped he wasn’t too late.
He stumbles into a hut and is ecstatic when he recognises his mother and sister. They are being protected by someone called Azhar who then disarms his gun. It seemed like his troubles were over.
