Zak is finally released from custody and heads home with a heavy heart. Khatija is delighted to see him and immediately tries to feed him up but he just wants a bath and to be left alone. Nadia takes him up some tea and hears him crying in his room. Between sobs he tells her to leave the tea outside.
Roopa’s very upset by Fatima’s death; they’d started to get quite close. She’s also worried about Zak. Rita saw Dr Masud at the police station; what if Zak has done something to himself because of Fatima? Aidan comforts her and says she should go to Fatima’s funeral; he’ll come with her. Roopa’s grateful for the support and they head for the cemetery. They arrive before everyone else. As they wait Roopa tells Aidan all about Fatima and what a strong, funny person she was. She was not what people expected of a Muslim girl in a headscarf. Roopa says she trusted her instincts and followed her heart; she wishes she could be more like that.
Fatima’s father goes up to talk to Zak. The funeral cars will be arriving soon and he wants Zak to sit with him and Firdos. Haltingly Zak confesses to his father-in-law that he can’t go through with it. Jamil is shocked but he knows what Zak has been through and doesn’t want to pile pressure on him. He tells Zak that Fatima would understand and wouldn’t judge him. This makes Zak feel worse; he knows if it were the other way round, Fatima wouldn’t let him down.
The funeral party arrives at the cemetery without Zak. Seconds later though, a taxi pulls up and Zak steps out. Fatima made him feel like he could do anything and he’s determined not to lose that. Both families are relieved to see him and Jamil gives him a handful of earth. Ignoring Zak’s protests he says Zak was her husband; he should be the one to throw the first handful.
