Zenab is moving furniture around Imran’s room so he can make a fresh start when he gets home. Rozena tells her that there’s graffiti on the shop window and if the Prosecution tore into Imran, what will they do to her? Zenab assures her she’s there for her and the thaveez will protect her. Rozena throws it away, is that what she calls ‘being there’ for her? She doesn’t need her. Zenab tries to hug her but she tells her to leave her alone, she’s used to being alone. Even after she told her about the attack, she took Imran to Pakistan and left her again. She’s a mother who should put them first but Zenab bites back, she’d know nothing of being a mother.
Later Rozena tries to apologise. Zenab recalls how they felt when they first got to the UK. Mushtaq was the son who got lost in between his brothers so wanted to prove himself to his father by coming to England and being a success. They were meant to go back to Pakistan after a few years. She was alone in a country she didn’t understand while he worked all hours and people didn’t want them there either. She recalls how thugs mocked her accent but when she suggested going back to Pakistan, Mushtaq couldn’t give it up, he promised her a better life and they’ll only get it if they stay so Zenab left. She was going to take Rozena and Imran with her but they chose to stay with their dad.
Rozena says she knew her mum would be back but when she never came, they got used to life without her. Zenab knew that Mushtaq and her kids didn’t want her, she had nothing to come back for. Zenab gets upset when Rozena says she needed her after the attack. Individually, they are all alone and that’s because she walked out on them.
Rozena offers Zenab some of Shazia’s food. She refuses and says she would have come back if she’d known about the attack. Rozena explains she’d learnt to bottle emotions up which is why it’s hard for her to release them now. Zenab tells her to be brave in Court, they have to face the pain. Rozena agrees.
