Have your say

Roopa is on the phone giving Bina a blow by blow account of her holiday. It seems the only highlight was meeting Javier, her Spanish heart-throb. Krishan is annoyed that his school blazer is much too big for him. Rita’s insistence that he’ll grow into it doesn’t help. He starts whining that he wants a proper briefcase like Matty’s. Rita is so fed up that she gets out a present she’d been saving for him. It’s a schoolbag she bought in Spain. Krishan opens it and is horrified – it’s a handbag! Rita protests that it’s a satchel but Krishan angrily points out flowers on the strap. Kamla takes pity on him and takes Krishan into town to buy him the briefcase he wants.

Rita turns her attention to Roopa and asks what her plans are. Roopa replies that she’s off to Bina’s but Rita was thinking more long term. She suggests Roopa should go to some college open days. Roopa’s had enough of her parents’ nagging though and tells her mum to leave her alone. Rita tries again but Roopa is adamant she’s not doing any more exams. Rita suggests a vocational course but she can’t win as Roopa snaps back that her mum thinks she’s too thick to do anything else! At the end of her tether, Rita gives Roopa an ultimatum, she either gets herself to college or she gets a job. She tells Roopa she’s made her an appointment with a careers advisor. Roopa is furious at her mum’s meddling but Rita warns her she needs to do something soon before she runs out of options.

Zak takes Sway shopping for something to wear when he takes the Shahada. The shopkeeper, Ali, brings him a white Shalwar kurta to try. Sway’s not sure but Ali and Zak thinks he looks good in it. To Sway’s embarrassment the other customers gather round at Ali’s insistence and applaud when he tops off Sway’s outfit with a Topi. When Sway takes his purchases to the till to pay Ali won’t hear of it; it’s a gift to celebrate Sway joining the faith. Zak explains that Ali was a convert as well and changed his name when he became a Muslim. Sway muses that he’d thought about that himself and was considering changing his name to Bilal after Husrat Bilal, because he was a black convert too.
