Have your say

It’s Mushtaq’s turn to record his memories of partition and he recounts a moving story of how his grandmother and his uncle got on the wrong train in all the chaos and found themselves bound for India. They were protected by Hindus and Sikhs in their carriage when the train was attacked by extremists looking for Muslims. Their fellow passengers disguised his grandmother and pretended they were all together so they were not discovered.

Next it’s Mani’s turn but he’s not very forthcoming at first. Vinnie persuades him to talk about Aunty Sumita. Mani finds it hard to talk about but eventually tells the harrowing tale of how his Aunty saw her husband brutally attacked and killed by a group of Muslims. Jas and Vinnie reflect on the atrocities committed by all sides and wonder how it could have happened.

Jai tries to persuade Shazia to join the gym but she declines, introducing herself as his local MP. Jai tells her about the threats he’s received and the damage to his car. Shazia can’t help but she recommends he report it to the police. As she leaves the gym Shazia bumps into Mushtaq. They chat, a little awkwardly, about family stuff, both of them unable to discuss what they really want to talk about. Mushtaq hurries off to check on the progress at Jilani Stores. Satisfied with what he sees Mushtaq sets off for home but is stopped by Jai who sympathises with him about the fire. Mushtaq reassures him, Jilani Stores will open again in a fortnight but Mushtaq’s done a lot of thinking while he’s been away and he’s decided it’s time for big changes. The Jilani’s are going in a new exciting direction!

Jai wanders home wondering what Mushtaq has planned. He’s greeted by Jaggy holding an envelope addressed to Jai. Jaggy has opened it by mistake, it’s another anonymous letter but this time they want to meet Jai, tomorrow, at a warehouse. Jaggy’s shocked when he realises Jai intends to go and tells him to call the police. Jai tells him to mind his own business, you don’t mess with these people and he needs to settle this, once and for all.
