Jai answers the intercom to hear Kamla at the other end. He buzzes her up, what a result! Kamla isn’t ready to forgive and forget just yet though. She’s turns her nose up at the fancy apartment. It’s just a shiny box, with no garden, far away from Rita and the children? Kamla angrily snaps and tells Jai some home truths about the damage he did, leaving her penniless and homeless. Jai tries to explain how sorry he is but can Kamla trust him when he’s hurt so many people? Jai declares that no matter what, he will never, ever forget his Ba. All he wanted was for her to be proud of him and now he can, he’s got money and big plans. Kamla begins to weaken but she emphasizes he can’t expect Rita and Pradeep to be interested. Jai senses his mum is softening and announces confidently that Rita will come round...soon.
Rita gets an urgent translating job with Social Services. Carla fills Rita in on the family they’re dealing with. Mrs Doshi is in hospital after a fall and there’s been a report that her son Ravi, who is disabled, has come to school covered in bruises. Ravi’s brother and sisters are refusing to talk to Carla, using Gujarati as a code between the three of them. Rita and Carla go to the school library where, Aarti, Haya and Mohindra are waiting. Aarti has warned the others to keep quiet and only speak Gujarati. Carla tries to talk to them first but the kids ignore her and carry on chatting in their own language. They are startled however when Rita introduces herself in Gujarati and they realise she’s understood everything. Rita can’t get anywhere with the eldest girl so she tries to talk to Mohindra, the youngest and gain his confidence. Mohindra is obviously upset and in his distress he reveals that his dad will be angry if he talks about how his mum fell. Carla suspects that Mr Doshi might have something to do with the fall and decides it’s time to visit Mrs Doshi in hospital. Mrs Doshi is no more cooperative than her children though. Rita and Carla finally give up, it’s obvious Mrs Doshi is scared and they can both see the bruises on her arms. It’s time to pay dad another visit!
