Have your say

Rita and Pradeep are concerned about Roopa who has just left for her maths exam. Bina has promised to look out for her but Rita wonders if they should have walked with her to school. Pradeep is sure she’ll be ok, but they need to be extra supportive now they know how stressed she is.

Roopa and Bina discuss the exams. Roopa can’t understand how Bina can be so cheerful about them. Bina explains that exams mean end of year and that means three months off and then when they come back…no more uniform! Roopa’s been summoned to see the head of year later about walking out of her French exam so Bina gives her a Silver Dolphin charm for luck. The two girls struggle through the maths exam and are glad when its over, hopefully they haven’t done too badly. Roopa tells Bina she thinks the lucky charm helped her through it.

Arun has persuaded Danyal to meet him after their row last week. Arun’s feeling embarrassed about his behaviour and tells Danyal how sorry he is. He ties himself in knots trying desperately not to say the wrong thing. Danyal can’t help but laugh at his awkwardness and agrees to give him another chance.

Jas suddenly realises she hasn’t got anything smart enough to wear for her interview at the local paper and rushes round to raid Rita’s wardrobe. They find a suitable outfit but Jas draws the line at Rita’s offer of a handbag that looks like one of Kamla’s! As she saunters off without a trace of nerves Rita and Pradeep wonder how Jas and Roopa can be so different.

Jas’s interview begins well and the editor seems impressed by her course and her work experience. He gives her some examples of the sort of stories she might be asked to cover. He wonders if she would have any feminist objections to covering something like a beauty contest. Jas explains how she would deal with a story like that but the editor laughs at her serious approach. His readers want gossip, not political discussion. Jas is taken aback by his attitude and suddenly realises she’s made a big mistake. She apologises to the editor for wasting his time, but she’s not the person he’s looking for!
