Sway and Gramps eat a hearty breakfast like condemned men before Shirley arrives to smooth things over with the Akhtars. Sway asks her to leave well alone but Shirley is determined to get to the bottom of Sway’s sudden interest in Islam. She thinks he’s changing his religion because he can’t change his colour. Sway says that it’s not like that, the Akhtars had a problem with him being black at first but they’re getting used to him now. Shirley can’t believe what she’s hearing. Nothing Sway says convinces her that his interest is genuine. Gramps reminds Shirley how Sway used to bunk off Sunday School, that’s how religious he was! Sway protests he was only young. Shirley reckons he should be looking at his own religion again instead of turning to Islam.
Vinnie bumps into Kamla outside Beauty Magic and jokingly accuses her of checking out the builders. He asks if she’s had any news on Jai and Kamla tells him sadly no, but it’s Jai’s birthday today so maybe he’ll call…
Shirley calls at the Akhtars. She comes straight to the point explaining Gramps was very upset by the way Sway has been treated. Khatija, expecting an apology for Gramps’ behaviour, is thrown by this. Unusually politely for Khatija she explains they don’t have a problem with Sway personally, it’s just they’d prefer Nadia to marry someone from their own community. Nadia chips in that’s out of the question now. Shirley asks the Akhtars how they’d feel if Nadia wanted to convert to Christianity. Khatija snaps that Nadia would never do that.
Shirley returns to Sway’s flat having resolved nothing. She tries to persuade Sway to come home with them for a while but he won’t. As Shirley and Gramps set off Sway dials Nadia’s number needing to hear a friendly voice. He asks Nadia to meet him but Nadia says it’s not a good time and she’s got to go because Kamal is calling her. Disappointed, Sway ends the call wondering if Nadia realises just how much grief he’s going through.
