Krishan is at the pub with Arun, collecting more sponsorship money. He tells Mary he is upset that Kamla missed his spelling for charity and he feels everyone is too busy for him these days. He thinks he must have done something wrong because Kamla didn't turn up on his birthday like she promised. Mary tries to convince him that none of this is his fault. To cheer him up Mary suggests that he gives a live spelling performance that night at the pub; she's worried and wants to keep an eye on him.
Mary slips out to phone Kamla to ask her to come and see Krishan. Kamla says she can't because Jai is due back. Mary is shocked and concerned that Kamla has been alone for so long, but Kamla is defensive and pretends everything is okay. Mary finally loses her patience; she tells Kamla some home truths about Jai and tells her off for letting Krishan down. Kamla attacks back saying that Mary has always stood by her own family no matter what. Mary wants to know why Kamla only stands by some of her family, but never Rita. It escalates into a huge row ending with Kamla slamming down the phone.
Kamla is just getting over the row when the doorbell rings. Convinced it will be Jai she rushes to the door but is disappointed to find a stranger there. To her confusion he introduces himself as the landlord. She protests that she owns the house with her son. The landlord tells her that Jai rented the house from him and the rent is overdue. He wants one thousand pounds rent from her by Monday or he's throwing her out. Devastated, Kamla collapses crying to the floor.
