It's already afternoon by the time Sway surfaces. His mum is ironing downstairs and he asks her if she ever took Kuljit to see his dad in the hospital. Shirley says they took Kuljit three or four times but he was so disturbed by it that they finally stopped. When Kuljit comes down he's keen to get on the road but Shirley persuades them to stay for lunch.
Over lunch, Kuljit tells everyone he'd hoped to get more watertight information about his dad, but he has found out that his dad had a girlfriend during his period of community care. Once they're in the van, Kuljit tells Sway they need to make a detour - to see his dad's girlfriend, Neera. He didn't mention before that he'd got her address because he wasn't sure he could face her.
Neera is shocked when Kuljit explains who he is but welcomes him in. She describes how she met Amrit in a supermarket. He did seem different but not like he had any real problems. Neera says she really loved him and everything was fine until she had an accident. She was only in hospital a day but when she came out Amrit was different and from then on he just deteriorated, until finally they had to section him again. Kuljit recognises the same chain of events as when his mum died. Neera's grateful to be able talk about Amrit and pleased to have met Kuljit. She hopes he's got what he needed...
