Hi, my name is Amy Sinha. I'm a 27 year old Singer/Musician living in South Wales.

What defines me as a British Asian, is the fact that I am comfortable around and can relate with both the British and Asian culture. I can happily talk and socialise with British people, with out forgetting my so called “Indian morals and roots.” that both my parents instilled in me from a young age. However, I can also understand and socialise with the Asian community, with out forgetting where I have grown up and what the British culture has given me - openness, communication and honesty, both with my family and with myself.

Growing up in a predominantly white society and also having a few disabilities made me extremely noticeable, resulting in my confidence from a young age being very low. Music, (Jazz in particular,) is a big part of my life, and if I was brought up in India, I’m not sure that would have been a road I would have thought of or even been able to peruse .

My life has been difficult, but It is my belief that the British culture helped me to gain a certain confidence that I needed to be happy. But nor forgetting my Indian background which has given me a different perspective on my life, both enabling me to follow my dreams.

It is far from easy combining two such different cultures together, but I believe that British Asians today can take the first steps in reaching compromises within the two cultures that will hopefully bring a happy balance between the two societies .

I love being Indian and I also love living in the UK, and would not want to change that.
