No cold approach, no altered mien, Just what would make suspicion start; No pause the dire extremes between, He made me blest - and broke my heart.

No cold approach, no altered mien, Just what would make suspicion start; No pause the dire extremes between, He made me blest - and broke my heart.
This is a song by Robert Burns. It was written in 1792 and is read here by Maureen Beattie.
Ralph Richard McLeanThe four lines are a fragment which Burns wrote to accommodate the music for the song, 'The Tears I shed', which appeared in The Scots Musical Museum (1792). Burns says that it was a Miss Cranston who wrote the song's other verses. It is set to the tune, 'Ianthy the lovely'.
