This is an epigram by Robert Burns. It was written in 1795 and is read here by Alan Cumming.
Ralph McLeanJames Gracie (1756-1814) was a manager of the Dumfries Commercial Bank and the Dean of Guild.
He was also a Captain in the Dumfries Volunteers, a group with which Burns was closely associated.
A week before Burns died he actually wrote to Gracie thanking him for offering the poet the use of his carriage.
