O thou who kindly dost provide For every creature's want! We bless Thee, God of Nature wide, For all Thy goodness lent: And if it please Thee, Heavenly Guide, May never worse be sent; But , whether granted, or denied, Lord, bless us with content. Amen!

This poem was first printed in the Edinburgh periodical The Caledonian Mercury on August 27th, 1789. Also known as A Grace before Dinner this poem appeared as part of a pair alongside A Grace after Meat. Neither were included in the 1793 Edinburgh edition, but later resurfaced in Dr James Currie's biography in 1800.
