Roger McGough came to fame in the 1960s as one third of the comedy group The Scaffold. In conversation with Sue MacGregor, he reminisces about growing up in Liverpool and describes the circumstances that brought The Scaffold together. The interview also includes examples of McGough's whimsical poetry.

The Scaffold's chart hits include Thank U Very Much, Liverpool Lou and a raucous version of the traditional song Lily the Pink. As they were not musicians themselves, Roger McGough, John Gorman and Mike McGear were joined on the records by such luminaries as Elton John (back when he was plain Reg Dwight), Tim Rice, Zoot Money, Keith Moon and Mike McGear's brother, Paul McCartney.
