A visual smorgasbord of statistical aids was used for the coverage of the Labour landslide of 1997, including a fresh seating plan for the House of Commons and a tricky new swingometer to reflect the massive 12.5% surge to the left.

The Labour Party won the 1997 general election with 418 seats, the most it has ever held. Conversely, the Conservatives finished with a record low of 165 seats and no MPs representing constituencies in Scotland or Wales.
