1953: Coronation crowds sleep out to glimpse Queen

For the Queen's Coronation, thousands of people camped out overnight in London to get a glimpse of her along the processional route.

This Television Newsreel report captures the sense of anticipation and excitement on such a momentous day.

Of those who did not make it to London for the Coronation, 10.4 million people watched in the homes of friends and neighbours, while 1.5 million watched in public places such as pubs and cinemas.
