Have you ever bought an outfit you have only worn once before it has ended up in the back of your wardrobe?

Now people in the UK are being told to change their shopping habits – and to save the environment by renting their clothes instead of buying them to.

The British government’s Waste Resource Action programme (WRAP) is encouraging people to stop buying products like clothing, tools and glassware that they will only use a few times.

It says that underused purchases are wastefully producing greenhouse gases and cluttering up peoples’ homes.

If more consumers start renting instead of buying things, it could make a considerable reduction in carbon emissions made through manufacturing.

WRAP spokesperson Keith James says that if ten to twenty per cent of manufacturers move from purchasing to leasing to customers there could be a reduction of 300 million tons of C02 between now and 2050.

It is already common for people in the UK to rent bikes and cars, and they can rent items like suits, designer clothes and handbags too.

But some shoppers in the UK told the BBC they do not like the idea of renting and prefer to own their possessions.
